Building codes for new home construction and home improvement
It is important to know and understand your town or cities building code guidelines when building your new home. Building codes are a guideline on how your home is to be constructed; they are set in place primarily for your safety and vary from region to region. For example, individuals that live near or in regions with seismic activity, such as California, new homes will be required to meet a seismic code. Homes near or in areas that are prone to wind damage from hurricanes, such as Florida, will be required to meet a specific wind code. If you are going to be your own contractor, then you will definitely want to research all of the building codes for the construction of your new house. Here are some common home building codes. IRC = International Residential Code, BOCA = Building Officials & Code Administrators International, Inc. has been consolidated into the International Code Council (ICC). ICBO = International Conference of Building Officials has been consolidated into the International Code Council (ICC). UBC = Uniform building code CABO = One and Two Family Dwelling Code IBC = International Building Codes SBCCI = Southern Building Code Congress International has been consolidated into the International Code Council (ICC).
