Insulating your new home and R-value guidelines
Review your local building code requirements to help you determine required local R value expectations.

Thermal insulation is used in home building construction to slow down heat transfer. The same insulation materials are required to keep buildings cooler in hot climates, or warmer in cold climates. There are many types of insulation used in residential construction. The two commonly used are fiberglass insulation and cellulose blown insulation. Other insulation, such as expanding foam, rigid foam board, and natural fiber are also used. Listed below are some home insulation related resources and links.

New home insulation facts – The Department of Energy says that if you are buying or building a new house, make sure that recommended energy-saving features are included. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) home insulation rule requires the seller of a new home to provide information on the type, thickness, and R-value of the insulation that will be installed in each part of the house in every sales contract.

Choosing the right R-value - An R-value is a measure of insulating power or ability to resist the flow of heat. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power, which means greater household energy savings and greater cost savings. Look for R-values on insulation packaging or talk to your contractor.

R-values of common insulations - This chart shows average R-values per inch of common insulating materials. Using this chart, you can determine the R-value of a particular amount of insulation from its thickness.
