Saltbox Home Plans and Saltbox House Floor Plans. Saltbox home plans are a variation of Colonial style architecture and are named after the Colonial salt container they resemble.
If you take a typical Colonial style two-story house and extend the roof grade downward at the rear of the house, to a one-story extension of the basic Colonial box, and you've got a Saltbox Colonial home. Saltbox house plans are a graceful and easy way to enlarge the floor plan of the home. The extended space at the back of the Saltbox house lends itself to the modern desire for an open home design for a family room or combination kitchen/dining room, while still presenting a straightforward, traditional look to the street. Saltbox home plans are often very simple, with shingle or clapboard siding.
In most saltboxes, the rear lean-to addition was divided into three rooms: A central kitchen with fireplace and oven, a room reserved for childbirth and nursing the ill, and a pantry.
Similar design styles include Colonial house plans and Historic home plans.
The saltbox style blueprints in this collection represent the effort of dozens of home designers and architects. This guarantees a broad spectrum of architectural interpretations within this design style.
